Italy has given us legendary works of art, from the evocative paintings of Caravaggio and da Vinci to the miniature meat sculptures of Boyardee. Admire edible Italian masterpieces with today's Groupon: for $39, you get a four-course group cooking class for two at Al Boccalino (a $100 value). Classes take place Monday–Saturday at 7 p.m.
Nestled underground among the rustic eatery's exposed-brick walls and bistro tables, intimate gatherings of diners puree, sautée, and taste their way through a traditional four-course Italian feast during Al Boccalino’s cooking classes. Head chef Luigi DeNunzio scampers about the large kitchen, engulfing eaters in the hearty aromas of seasonal and local ingredients, roasting onions and braising scallops, all while peppering the ears with anecdotes, advice, and freshly grated peppercorn. Nibble on anchovy-tossed linguine or sautéed baby octopus fresh off the stove. Enthusiastic eaters can choose between cooking the menu themselves for a hands-on experience or opt for the more easy-going demonstration, watching as Luigi chops, seasons, and stages scenes from The Godfather with the dishes.
